Welcome!

Hello everyone and welcome to Today in Gaming for Wednesday May 17th! Happy hump day everybody, I hope your week is treating you well. Just a few more days until the weekend so let’s continue to push through. Without further ado let’s get started!

Dominate the Open World

A new trailer for Shadow of War has dropped today. Titled “Dominate the Open World” this trailer focuses heavily on the world of Mordor, showcasing the various landscapes that players can explore. Shadow of Mordor was already an amazing game and this sequel is shaping up to be something spectacular. The world seems so much larger and more alive, giving more depth and variety to the Nemesis system. Personally I can’t wait for Shadow of War, launching August 22nd.

The Witcher + Netflix

The Witcher series has had many iterations besides the game. It was originally a series of books by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski that were extremely popular in the fantasy realm over in Poland. It then was turned into the Polish TV series and film titled “The Witcher”. A few more graphic novels dropped based off the franchise and then we finally got the video games series we all know and love from CD Projekt Red. Now, thanks to Netflix, the series is making its way back to screens everywhere in a new Netflix series. This new series even has the blessing of Sapkowski himself as he will be working as a creative consultant on the series and had this to say:

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

Hopefully these new video game series coming from Netflix (CastleVania & The Witcher) are good enough to push video games into a whole new media. We have a few prolific names working on the series including Sean Daniel (The Mummy), Jason Brown (The Expanse), and an Oscar nominated visual effects studio: Platige Image S.A. Nothing else is known about the series, including wether it will be animated or live action. However, the world of The Witcher is enormous and should hold many captivating stories. We shall see.

Fractured but Whole Release Date

Remember when the new South Park game was supposed to be released in December of 2016? Remember when it then got pushed back to March of 2017? Remember when it was then again pushed to December of 2017? Well, none of those dates are correct as a new release date was announced for the title today. Ubisoft confirmed today in a new trailer that the game will indeed be coming out soon. The trailer focuses on “the farting vigilante” and showcases some scenes of gameplay and story elements to get fans excited for this constantly delayed title. Coon and friends come to the rescue October 17th.

   Gwent Public Beta

Oh look more Witcher news. Gwent was originally an addictive mini card game within the massive world of The Witcher 3. It has now been transformed into its own stand alone free to play game thanks to CD Projekt Red. The current closed beta testing cycle will be ending May 22nd as the game enters a period of maintenance to prepare for a completely open public beta. All progress from the closed beta will be wiped to allow for an equal playing ground of all players, although previous players will be granted special in-game bonuses. Gwent: The Witcher Card Game enters public beta for PC, Ps4, and Xb1 on May 24th.

Overwatch Anniversary Event

The one year birthday of Overwatch is quickly approaching and we’ve heard many rumors about an event coming up to celebrate. That was until today when we finally received confirmation that there will indeed be an anniversary event to celebrate such a popular and beloved title. Unsurprisingly the event is going to be called “the Anniversary Event” and will begin May 23rd. No details are given as usual but we did receive news regarding a game of the year edition. This version of the game drops the same day as the event starts and will include select hero skins along with a bonus of 10 loot boxes for the chance of obtaining more customization pieces. Other bonuses of the game include Tracer in Heroes of the Storm and a baby Winston pet in World of Warcraft.
To go along with the event Blizzard will also be hosting another free weekend for the game. Starting May 26th and lasting until May 29th, Overwatch will be completely free to play to allow gamers everywhere to take part in the hero shooter action. Don’t miss out on the event or free weekend, starting May 23rd and May 26th respectively.

Test Your Punches with ARMS

Today’s Nintendo direct was all about ARMS. So much news came out today for the upcoming title for the Nintendo Switch. A whole bunch of new characters have been revealed for the title including the interesting movie star Twintelle and the robot Byte and his dog Barq. Then there’s a few new gameplay modes including Hoops (obviously basketball focused), V-Ball which is essentially volleyball with a bomb, and SkillShot. Finally, the best thing to come from this direct was the bomb drop of a public “testpunch” coming to Switch owners. This open beta test will be coming up prior to the games launch, giving players 2 separate chances to give the game a chance. Keep a lookout for the testpunches happening May 26th to 28th and June 2nd to 4th.

Until Next Time…

Thank you all for joining me today for another day of gaming news! As always I’d love to hear from you all down below. Be sure to leave any and all messages and I’ll see you all again tomorrow. Until then, have a wonderful evening!
